Endurism Spotlight: Yamaha YTR-2330
A rented school trumpet costs €150 a year. At the end of the year the child hands it back.
The object
The Yamaha YTR-2330 is the trumpet most Dutch music schools put in a beginner's hands. It is a Bb student horn in gold-brass lacquer, built to the valve tolerances Yamaha is known for. New, it sells for around €538. A player keeps it through the school years and often for life. The parts that wear are the valves and the lacquer. A brass technician can service both for decades.
The default beginner's path is the rental, paid every year for an instrument that never becomes yours.
The math
Renting feels light because the yearly bill is small. The total is not. A child who stays with lessons for five years pays €750 in rental and owns nothing at the end. The same €538 buys the Yamaha outright. A used YTR-2330 still sells for around €325 on Marktplaats, so five years of ownership cost about €213.
| Rent a trumpet | Own the YTR-2330 | |
|---|---|---|
| Up front | €0 | €538 |
| Per year | €150 | €0 |
| Five-year outlay | €750 | €538 |
| Resale after five years | handed back | about €325 |
| Net five-year cost | €750 | about €213 |
Owning costs roughly a third of renting across those five years. The gap grows wider every year after, because the rental never ends and the instrument never changes hands.
Renting the first year makes sense when nobody knows whether the lessons will last. The cost shows up in year four and five, when the playing is serious and the bill still arrives.
Ownership
A Yamaha student trumpet keeps its value because it keeps its playability. Valves can be relapped and dents rolled out. A worn mouthpiece costs a few euros to replace. A YTR from the 1980s still plays in tune and still finds a buyer today. The lacquer thins at the points of contact and the brass glows through. That wear is the record of a player.
A no-name trumpet from a bargain site runs the other way. The valves stick within a season and no technician stocks the parts. It resells for nothing. The cheapest trumpet is the one that costs the most.
Verdict
Rent for four years and you have bought the trumpet without ever owning it.
