Endurism Spotlight: The Window Squeegee
A window cleaner rings your bell once a month. Fifteen minutes later the round is done. Twenty euros of yours are gone. Book that visit for ten years and the glass costs you around €2.400. The tool that does the same work costs €29,50 and lasts the rest of your life.
The object
The professional squeegee is a stainless steel channel, a moulded handle, and a strip of rubber. Window cleaners have used this exact shape for a century. The steel does not rust. The handle sits in the hand without strain. The only part that wears is the rubber blade. A fresh one costs €2,50.
Pair it with a washer, the fluffy sleeve on a T-bar that carries the soapy water. The two tools clear glass faster than any spray and kitchen roll. A terraced house takes one person about fifteen minutes.
The math
Prices are Dutch and current. A glazenwasser charges €20 to €50 per visit for the outside (Werkspot). A monthly round at the low end is €240 a year. The kit is an Unger ErgoTec squeegee at €29,50 plus a matching washer at €28,50. That is €58, paid once. After that you spend a few euro a year on rubbers and a splash of cleaner.
| Ten years | Own the squeegee | Pay the glazenwasser |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front | €58 (squeegee + washer) | €0 |
| Each year | about €8 (rubbers, cleaner) | about €240 (monthly visit) |
| Total | about €140 | about €2.400 |
Over ten years the squeegee saves you roughly €2.260. It pays for itself after the third visit you skip. Even a quarterly round at €25 passes €1.000 a decade. The gap holds however often the cleaner comes.
Ownership
Nothing here loses value the way a gadget does. The steel channel outlives the house. When the rubber starts to streak you slide in a new one in ten seconds. There is no motor to burn out and no subscription to cancel. You buy the tool once and own the job forever.
The honest limit is reach. Upstairs street-side windows and skylights can stay with a professional or wait for a water-fed pole. Everything at arm's length, inside and out, is yours from the first weekend.
Verdict: a thirty-euro tool does a job you have been renting by the month. Buy the squeegee and keep the difference.
