Prices are Dutch retail (bol.com, July 2026) plus the Marktplaats secondhand market. Horizon is the 3-year NCO window and the real tool horizon of 20 years.

1. NCO ledger

Hand tools are a third case. There is no patina. Steel does not amortise by ageing. The dividend is paid in the replacements you never make. It is paid again in the fasteners you never round out.

The honest number first. For twice-a-year use, the cheap set wins the three-year cash by sixty-five euro. It does not break in three years of occasional jobs. The ninety euro buys nothing extra at that intensity.

2. The Editor

A cheap screwdriver fails at the tip. The tip rounds. Then it rounds the screw. Now you own two problems.

Wera has made screwdriving tools in Wuppertal since 1936. The Kraftform handle arrived in 1968. Wera developed the shape with the Fraunhofer Institute. It has not changed since. The hand has not changed either.

The Tool-Check Plus is thirty-nine pieces in a box the size of a wallet. A forged quarter-inch ratchet. Sixty teeth. A six-degree return angle. Rated to sixty-five newton-metres. Seven sockets. A handle holder. A set of hard bits.

The bits are the part that wears. They are standard quarter-inch hex. A dull bit costs two euro to replace. The ratchet does not wear. The handle does not wear. That is the whole argument.

A cheap set is built the other way. Everything wears together. The mechanism loosens. The bits round. The case cracks. You do not replace the bit. You replace the set.

The honest number first. A Parkside ratchet set costs twenty-five euro. The Wera costs ninety. Over three years of light use, the Parkside wins the cash. It survives a few jobs a year. For twice-a-year use, the ninety euro is dead money.

The math changes when you use tools. Under real load the cheap mechanism slackens. The bits round inside two years. You replace the set. Then again. Three sets in twenty years. Seventy-five euro. A worn tool at the end. The Wera is one purchase. It is the same tool at year twenty.

The cost that sits in neither column is cam-out. A rounded bit rounds the screw. A stripped head on a dishwasher panel costs more than the price delta. A seized bolt you now have to drill out costs a Saturday. The Wera Lasertip is etched to bite the head. It pushes less. It slips less. You pay for the tip that does not cam out.

The dividend here is the replacements you never made. Steel does not develop a patina. A screwdriver at year ten looks like year one. The value is in the jobs it did without failing.

Wera holds value secondhand. The used market is active. Near-new sets list close to retail. Clean sold comps are thin, so the ledger holds resale out. Treat it as upside. A cheap set recovers nothing.

You buy this once. The bits swap for two euro when they dull. The ratchet outlives the jobs. Keep it in a drawer. It will be there for the next twenty years of small repairs.

3. Verdict card

The cheap set is disposable whole. The Wera makes the wear part a two-euro consumable and the tool permanent.
