Endurism Spotlight: The Washable Spray Mop

A single Swiffer WetJet pad costs €0,63 and cleans one floor. Then it goes in the bin, wet and grey. You buy another for the next mop.

Run that habit for a decade. Twice a week is normal mopping for a home with hard floors. That comes to about 1.040 pads. At €0,63 each, the pads alone reach €650. That is €65 a year, spent on cloth you throw away wet. The plastic mop that sprayed them was the cheap part.

The object

A refillable spray mop does the same job without the refill bill. The Bona Premium Spray Mop costs €52,95. It carries a cartridge of floor cleaner and a flat microfibre pad on its base. You pull the trigger to spray the cleaner, then push the pad across the floor. That pad is the whole trick. It is rated for 500 machine washes. You clean the floor and wash the pad afterwards. The pad clips onto the base with a standard fitting, so a replacement stays cheap and easy to find.

One pad covers about five years of twice-weekly mopping. A second pad at €14,95 carries the rest of the decade. The cartridge refills from a four-litre bottle of Bona cleaner at €27,98. That works out cheaper per mop than the cartridges Swiffer sells.

The money

Here is ten years of the same clean floor, counted two ways.

Both systems spray a floor cleaner, so that cost sits on both sides. The divide is the pad. One washable pad replaces a thousand disposable ones. The refillable mop runs about ten times cheaper. It keeps that lead every year you own it.

Ownership

Nothing here wears out on a fixed schedule. The pad washes and returns. The cartridge unscrews and refills. When a part finally gives, Bona sells it as a part. The mop keeps working. A cleaning tool holds no resale value. It does not need to. The money is already in the pad you own.

The washable pad costs €14,95 and lasts 500 floors. The disposable version costs €650 to do the same job. Own better.
