Endurism Spotlight: Vox AC15C1
A used Vox AC15 on Marktplaats this week asks €425. The amp was built in 2016 and still gets played live.
The money
Most gear loses its money the day you carry it home. A guitar amp does not have to. The Vox AC15C1 costs €739 new at Thomann. On the second-hand market the same amp trades between €400 and €575. Owning one for a decade costs you that gap, plus a set of valves. Call it a couple hundred euros for ten years of a professional amplifier.
The cheap route starts at €75. A Fender Frontman 10G is a fine first amp. It also resells for almost nothing, and it caps what you can do. So it is rarely the last amp. The money you spend there is simply spent. The money you put into the Vox mostly waits for you, held in an object other players want.
Value retention is the mechanism. A durable amp is a store of money you can also plug in.
The object
The AC15 circuit dates to 1958. Vox has sold a version of it, more or less unchanged, ever since. It runs on valves. They wear slowly and cost under a hundred euros to replace. Any competent tech swaps them in an afternoon. There is no sealed board to condemn the whole unit when one part ages.
That is why the used market is deep. A forty-year-old AC15 still gets gigged. A solid-state practice amp from the same year is landfill.
The math
| Vox AC15C1 | Fender Frontman 10G | |
|---|---|---|
| New price | €739 | €75 |
| Resale after a decade | €400–575 | near zero |
| The wearing part | valves, under €100, any tech fits them | none you can replace |
| What you hold at the end | an amp worth around €500 | landfill |
Pay €739 and you keep an asset worth most of that whenever you want the cash. Pay €75 and you keep a box worth nothing, plus a reason to keep shopping. The cheaper number on paper is the more expensive habit over a playing life.
Ownership
Valves are the one wearing part. You budget for a set every few years and the amp is otherwise yours for life. Speakers can be reconed. Cabinets can be recovered. The tone people chase in modelling software is the tone this box makes by being plugged in. Patina here is literal. The tolex scuffs and the grille cloth fades while the resale holds.
The Vox AC15C1: €739 for an amplifier you sell for most of that whenever you like.
