A used Stressless recliner from the 1990s still asks three hundred euros on Marktplaats today. That is the whole argument in one listing.

    The object

Ekornes has built the Stressless in Norway since 1971. The reclining action runs on a steel frame and an internal spring mechanism. There is no motor to burn out. Ekornes guarantees that frame and mechanism for ten years. The leather is meant to soften and darken for decades, and worn hides can be reupholstered by the same factory. A chair bought new can be serviced, re-cushioned and re-covered long after the shop that sold it has closed. This is why the second-hand market is so deep. People buy them, use them for twenty years and sell them on, because the chair is still worth selling.

    The math

A new Stressless Consul with its footstool costs €2.579 at a Dutch dealer. That number frightens people out of the showroom and into a €450 faux-leather recliner instead. The cheap chair is the expensive one. Its polyurethane coating cracks and flakes within a few years and the frame works loose. Then it goes to the tip worth nothing. Sit for twenty-five years and you buy roughly five of them.

The two columns cost almost the same each year. Only one of them leaves you holding an asset. The disposable route feels cheaper because every purchase is small and forgettable. You pay it five times and own nothing at the end. Buy the Stressless once and a few hundred euros of it stays yours. It sits in your living room, ready to sell whenever you want.

    Ownership

A Stressless ages toward its best years. The leather takes the shape of the person who sits in it and the colour deepens where hands rest. That patina is exactly what second-hand buyers pay for. The faux-leather chair moves the other way and looks worst on the day it starts to fail.

    Verdict

Buy the chair someone will still want to buy from you in thirty years.
