1. NCO Ledger: the furniture-for-a-child variant
Reference: Stokke Tripp Trapp, €206,09 (bol.com; adviesprijs €228,99, July 2026). European beech, rated to 136 kg. Marktplaats resale averages €66 to €85 across thousands of live listings. The counterpart is the IKEA Antilop, €14,99 to €19,99 with tray, rated to age three or 15 kg.
Year three. The Antilop's whole working life.
| Tripp Trapp | IKEA Antilop | |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | €206 | €20 |
| Resale, year 3 | −€90 | €0 |
| 3-year Net Cost of Ownership | €116 | €20 |
The Antilop wins by €96. Print it. It is a well-made chair for the three years it was built for.
Year eighteen. The Tripp Trapp's design brief: birth to adult seating.
| Tripp Trapp | The chair sequence | |
|---|---|---|
| Chairs bought | 1 (€206) | Antilop (€20) + child's chair (€60) + adult chair share (€150) |
| Resale, year 18 | −€70 | €0 |
| 18-year Net Cost of Ownership | €136 | €230 plus |
One object, adjusted twice with an Allen key, against a sequence of purchases that never quite stops.
Gap flagged: the chair-sequence figure is household logic, hardly a receipt trail. The €70 year-18 resale reads off today's Marktplaats levels. Verify both before publication.
2. Long-form
A six-month-old eats in it. Twelve years later the same chair holds a teenager. On birthdays, a grandmother.
Peter Opsvik drew the Tripp Trapp in 1972. It has been in production ever since: European beech, two rails that slide for seat and footrest, a load rating of 136 kilos. It was never a baby chair. It is a chair that happens to fit a baby first.
The IKEA Antilop is its honest opposite. Twenty euro, cleverly engineered, stable, easy to hose down. It is also rated to age three. IKEA says so plainly. At fifteen kilos the Antilop retires to the garage. The household buys the next chair. Then, years later, the one after that.
At year three the ledger belongs to IKEA, €20 against €116. That number is true and stays true. But a chair does not serve a family for three years. Run the eighteen: one Tripp Trapp against a sequence of seats, each bought because the previous one could no longer keep up with the child.
The resale needs no estimating. Marktplaats lists Tripp Trapps in the thousands on any given day, most between €60 and €90, plenty of them fifteen years old. A dedicated Dutch trade, gebruiktekinderstoelen.nl, buys them in any condition, restores them, and sells them on with a guarantee. Nobody has ever built that business on the Antilop.
Ownership is two screws and a pencil mark. Loosen, slide the seat up a notch, tighten. The beech collects two decades of table life and wears it as history.
The Antilop feeds a baby and leaves the house. The Tripp Trapp feeds the family, then sells to the next one.
3. Verdict card
One chair from the first meal to the last one at home. Then it starts over at someone else's table.
4. VO script (55 sec, documentary)
A baby at the table. Six months old.
Same chair. The child is seven. The seat has moved up twice.
Same chair. A teenager now. No booster, no straps.
The Tripp Trapp. Designed in 1972.
Two hundred and six euro.
The IKEA chair costs twenty. Good chair. Three years. Then it's done.
So you buy the next chair. And later, the one after that.
Search Marktplaats. Thousands of Tripp Trapps. Fifteen years old. Seventy euro.
There is a whole Dutch business restoring this one chair.
One family finishes with it.
Another begins.
