1. NCO Ledger

Reference: Stanley Classic Legendary thermos, €65,99 (outdoor-food.nl, July 2026). Stainless steel, vacuum-walled, lifetime warranty; Stanley states it would rather replace a part than the bottle. The counterpart is the €8 plastic sports bottle, retired roughly every 18 months as it clouds, smells, or loses its seal.

Year three.

The plastic bottle wins the window by more than €40. That is the honest number.

Year fifteen.

At fifteen years the lines cross. The Stanley finishes even at worst, ahead at best, having needed nothing but a wash.

2. Long-form

A bottle stamped 1913 would still hold coffee this morning. The plastic one from three summers ago is already gone.

William Stanley Jr. patented the all-steel vacuum bottle in 1913. The Classic Legendary is its direct descendant: double-walled stainless steel, a lifetime warranty, and a stated policy of replacing the part before the product. It costs €65,99.

The plastic bottle costs €8 and asks nothing. Then it clouds. It holds the smell of everything it ever carried. The seal softens. Around month eighteen it slips into the bin without ceremony. Its successor arrives so cheaply the purchase never registers. Over three years that habit costs €16 to €24. The Stanley loses that window outright, by a wide margin. The ledger says so in plain type.

Fifteen years changes the arithmetic. Eight to ten plastic bottles add up to €64 to €80. The Stanley still stands at €65,99, the same object, the same seal, dented in the way steel dents: visibly and without consequence.

One more thing deserves plain type, because it comes from Stanley's own catalogue. The Quencher tumbler is built from the same lifetime steel. It currently sells on color. A new seasonal shade, a new purchase, while the old one works perfectly. That is Principle VI wearing a pastel: the trend cycle taxing an object that was engineered to end trend cycles. This Dossier is about the plainer bottle and the plainer math.

Ownership is a rinse. The dents accumulate. The vacuum holds.

The plastic bottle wins three years. The steel one is still standing at fifteen.
