    1. NCO ledger (3 years)

The Goodyear-welted Solovair against the glued boot.

Honest at three years. A cheap glued boot can come in lower on day one. A fast-fashion pair runs eighty euros and the Solovair runs two hundred.

The welt is the whole argument. A Goodyear welt is a stitch that holds the sole to the boot. A cobbler can cut that stitch, lift the old sole and put a new one on. A glued boot has no stitch. When the sole wears through, the boot is done. Solovair even sells the replacement soles itself.

Against the famous glued copy the case is sharper. A cemented Dr. Martens costs about the same as a welted Solovair and cannot be resoled cleanly. Same money. One resoles for thirty years. The patina dividend follows the leather, which ages, and the welt, which keeps the boot alive.

    2. Long-form

Run your thumb along the bottom edge of these boots and you feel a line of stitching. That stitch is a Goodyear welt. It is the difference between a boot you resole for thirty years and a boot you throw away when the sole wears thin.

Solovair has made welted footwear in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, since 1881. There is a history worth knowing. Solovair built the original Dr. Martens boots, including the early models with the famous yellow stitching. The factory that made the icon still makes its own boots, by hand, in England. The 8 Eye Derby uses Goodyear welted construction and a soft air-cushioned sole that you can replace.

€180 to €220 for a pair. A glued boot can be cheaper to start, and the cemented Dr. Martens mainline costs about the same. The difference shows up at the sole. When a glued sole wears through, the boot is finished, because there is no clean way to attach a new one. The Solovair goes back to a cobbler. A resole runs sixty to a hundred and twenty euros, and Solovair sells the soles directly. One pair carries you through several soles and several years.

Be honest about the buy. There is a break-in period. The sizing runs large, so most people drop half a size. The soft suspension sole is PVC, not leather. And the Hi-Shine finish is corrected leather, polished and coated, so it ages less honestly than the natural greasy and gaucho leathers. For patina, choose the natural finishes. They scuff, soften and darken into something that is yours.

The leather ages. The welt keeps the boot alive. You resole instead of rebuy. That is ownership, paid once and maintained, against a subscription to whichever glued boot delaminates next.

    3. Verdict card

EN (etalage): The factory that made the original Dr. Martens. A stitched welt, a new sole every decade, one pair of boots for thirty years.

    Own better.

    4. VO-script (EN, 45 to 90 sec)

Documentary narrator. Calm. One line per shot. No talking head.

This factory made the original Dr. Martens. [macro: the Goodyear welt stitch along the sole] Feel the stitch along the sole. [a cobbler's knife lifting an old sole away] That stitch means a cobbler can resole it. [a glued boot, sole split from the upper, discarded] A glued boot has no stitch. When the sole goes, the boot goes. [hands lacing a worn, patinated leather boot] This leather ages. The boot gets resoled. [two boots side by side, one new, one years old and better for it] One pair. Thirty years. [product still on bone white] Own better.
