1. NCO Ledger

Reference: Sneeboer hand hoe, €82 new (Sneeboer pricing via Marktplaats listing, July 2026; range across the collection roughly €60 to €120). Hand-forged stainless steel, ash handle, made in Bovenkarspel since 1913. The handle is a replaceable part. The counterpart is the bouwmarkt hoe or hand tool at €10 to €15: stamped steel, plastic or glued handle, dull inside a season.

Year three.

The bouwmarkt tool wins the window by €23. Honest, as always.

Year thirty. Sneeboer's own line is tools for generations; the stainless blade sharpens rather than wears out.

Marktplaats confirms the floor: used Sneeboer averages €38, with barely-used pieces asking €45 per tool. Hand-forged garden steel holds value the way Felco does.

Gap flagged: resale figures are Marktplaats asking prices, unverified as sold comps. The ten-unit bouwmarkt count assumes a three-season life, a trade estimate.

2. Long-form

Four generations of the same family have hammered this steel in the same North Holland village. The schoffel in your shed can outlast the person swinging it.

Sneeboer has forged garden tools in Bovenkarspel since 1913. Each blade is hammered from stainless steel by hand, sharpened on every working edge, and hung on an ash handle that is a part, never a permanent fixture. When a handle finally splits after decades of weather, a new one costs €15 and an afternoon.

The bouwmarkt tool costs €12 and looks similar in the rack. It is stamped from sheet steel, edge unground, handle glued or moulded on. It goes dull inside one season and cannot be meaningfully sharpened. So next spring there is a new one. The spring after that, another. A €12 toll on every gardening year, quiet enough never to feel like spending.

Three years favors the cheap rack, €24 against €47. The Endurism ledger prints that without flinching. Thirty years reverses it: ten stamped tools against one forged blade with one new handle, €120 against €67, before counting the difference in the work itself. A hand-forged, four-side-sharpened hoe cuts weeds at the root in one pull. A dull stamped edge scrapes and bounces.

The resale floor is real and Dutch. Marktplaats carries used Sneeboer at an average asking price of €38, nearly half the new price, for garden tools. Nobody has ever listed a three-year-old bouwmarkt schoffel.

Ownership: rinse the blade, oil the ash once a year, touch the edge with a stone each spring. The steel brightens where it works. That bright line along the edge is the patina of a tool that earns its keep.
