    The Ski Kit

Owned alpine ski kit (skis, bindings, boots and poles)

    Endurism Spotlight: The Ski Kit

A week of rented skis and boots costs around €150. You hand it all back on the last day and own nothing.

Dutch rental counters charge €135 to €165 for a full set before a helmet or goggles. Snowplaza puts a real week at €150 to €270 a person. Ski one week a year for ten years and you have paid €1.500 to €2.000 to borrow gear. Each decade ends with the same empty hands it started with.

    The object

The kit is skis, bindings, boots and poles. A mid-range all-mountain set of skis and bindings runs about €500 in the Netherlands. Decent boots are €260 to €280. Poles are €40. Around €800 buys a kit that fits you and skis for years.

Alpine skis hold their edge and camber through well over a decade of recreational weeks. The boots are the quiet win. A rented boot is €87,50 a week for a liner packed out by a dozen other feet. Your own pair is fitted once and moulds to you.

    The math

The €800 kit is paid off around your fifth week on snow. After that each winter costs a wax and edge tune, roughly €30 a season. A used set still sells on Marktplaats for a couple of hundred euros when you move on.

One adult spends about €900 owning against €1.500 renting across the decade. A family of four multiplies that gap by four. Children outgrow boots every season, so for them rent or buy used and sell it on. Someone who skis once every few years should rent.

    Ownership

Owned skis get waxed on your own bench and tuned to your own edge. The topsheets scuff into a record of the winters behind them. The kit sits in the shed through July and is still worth money in December. It stays an asset the whole time you own it.

Renting buys nothing. The kit pays for itself by your fifth week and sells on when you are done.
