Every serious gust turns another cheap umbrella inside out. The ribs snap and the fabric tears. It goes straight in the nearest bin. You buy a replacement at the station, and in a wet, windy country you do this most winters, while the money leaks out a few euros at a time.

The Senz Original costs €69,99. Three industrial design students at TU Delft built it in 2006 to survive a storm. The canopy is asymmetric and shaped like a wing, so the wind lifts it instead of flipping it. The ribs are fibreglass and bend back into shape. It holds in gusts up to 100 km/h, the kind that wreck a standard umbrella. Senz has sold the same shape for close to twenty years.

Then the money. A basic umbrella costs around €12. In real wind it lasts a season, sometimes a single storm, before a rib gives out. Replace it most winters over a decade and you spend well past €120. Every broken one resells for nothing and lands in the bin. The Senz is €69,99 once. It comes through the storms that end the cheap ones. It holds a small used market of its own on Marktplaats.

An umbrella earns its keep on the worst day. The cheap one fails in the exact wind you bought it for. The Senz opens into a gale and stays open. Ten years on it is the same umbrella doing the same job. There is nothing to reproof and no part to replace. When you finally let it go, someone else pays for it.

Care is a towel and a dry hallway. You shake it out and leave it open to dry. That is the maintenance in full.

Verdict: €69,99 once for an umbrella that survives the storm and still sells, against a €12 umbrella you rebuy most winters for nothing back.
