    Endurism Spotlight: Schwalbe Marathon Plus

The cheap tyre on your commuter comes with a running bill. A flat on a wet Tuesday means twelve to twenty euros at the repair stand. It also means an hour you did not have.

Every thin city tyre invites the same bill. Glass, a thorn or a shard of gravel reaches the tube. A daily rider on a bare casing pays for that once or twice a year. The tyre itself wears smooth in two or three seasons. You buy another. The meter keeps running.

    The money

The Schwalbe Marathon Plus costs €43,90 for a 28-inch tyre. A standard city tyre costs around fifteen. On the shelf the cheap one looks like the winner. Then you ride a decade.

The cheap tyre never really costs fifteen euros. It costs fifteen plus every flat it lets through. That is where the decade goes. The gap between the two columns is about four times. It lands straight in your pocket.

    The object

The Marathon Plus is a touring and commuter tyre built around one idea. A five-millimetre band of springy rubber sits between the tread and the tube. Glass and flint press into it and stop there. Schwalbe rates it at their highest puncture level. They say even a nail struggles through. The casing is stiff and the sidewall is reinforced. The tyre is heavy to lift and slow to wear. That weight is the whole point. A tyre that shrugs off the road is a tyre you forget for years.

    Ownership

The blue belt shows through as the tread wears down. That stripe is the tyre telling you how far it has carried you. A Marathon Plus with ten thousand kilometres on it still holds air on a January morning. There is no resale on a tyre. The return comes as every flat you did not fix. It comes as every Saturday you kept off the repair stand.

One tyre that outlasts three and ends the puncture tax.
