The baggage carousel at Schiphol destroys about a suitcase a minute. Cracked shells, torn zips, wheels ground to stubs. Most of it was bought last summer.

I have watched people replace the same €70 trolley three times in five years. Each one arrived looking new. Each one left in a container.

Stretch the window and the arithmetic turns. Twenty years of trolleys is roughly seven purchases, €490, all of it gone. Twenty years of one aluminium case is €1,350 minus whatever it still sells for. Pre-LVMH cases from the nineties trade between €578 and €899 today. Older aluminium can sell above its original price. Depreciation is for the trolley. The case amortises.

Then there is the surface. A polycarbonate shell scratches and looks cheap. An aluminium shell dents and looks travelled. Owners photograph their dents. Airlines have accidentally created a patina economy: the more beaten the case, the higher the perceived provenance. This is the patina dividend in its purest form. The damage is the value.

Buy it once. Register the guarantee. Let the airports do the rest.
