Endurism Spotlight: The Power Rack
Basic-Fit takes €24,99 from your account every four weeks. The charge arrives whether you trained or not. Over a decade that comes to €3.249. A mid-range gym closer to €40 a month runs past €4.800. The money leaves. None of it stays yours.
The money
A home setup is bought once. A Body-Solid power rack costs about €745 in the Netherlands. Add an Olympic barbell, a hundred kilos of plates and a bench for around €450. The whole corner of the room comes to roughly €1.200. At a budget membership it pays for itself inside four years. At €40 a month it clears in under three. After that the training is free for as long as you lift.
The object
A power rack is a welded steel cage that holds a loaded barbell at any height. You squat and press inside it. The top bar takes your pull-ups. Body-Solid builds the GPR378 from eleven-gauge steel with a lifetime home warranty. Owners post photographs of racks bought in 2008 that still run true. There is nothing inside to burn out. Steel bolted to steel does not wear.
The math
The gym keeps charging and keeps nothing for you. The rack sits in the ledger as an asset. Used power racks ask between €175 and €450 on Marktplaats. Cast plates hold their price almost completely. Sell the setup years on. Between €600 and €800 comes back. The net cost of ownership lands near €500 across ten years.
| Home rack setup | Gym membership | |
|---|---|---|
| Up front | about €1.200 once | €19,99 join |
| Per year | €0 | €325 |
| Ten-year cost | about €500 after resale | €3.249, nothing back |
| Per session | about €0,32 | about €2,08 |
Three sessions a week for ten years is roughly 1.560 visits. The rack works out near thirty cents each. The membership sits above two euros. It climbs every week you skip.
Ownership
The steel chalks up and the finish scuffs at the J-hooks. Those marks are the only ageing it does. A rack asks for a few square metres and a solid floor. It replaces the barbell core of any gym. The pool and the classes stay behind. Most people never used them.
Own better. One steel cage repays the membership in three years and trains you for free the next thirty.
