The honest line: fast fashion wins the three-year cash comparison by €24. The 649 argument is parts and permanence. Any optician fits new lenses. The frame design has been in production since 1957.

The average pair of sunglasses dies one of three deaths. Sat on. Left on a train. Scratched past caring. The industry prices for all three: €22 a pair, margins of 50 to 65 percent, a replacement guaranteed by next June.

The Persol 649 was designed in 1957 for Turin tram drivers. Wide lenses against wind and dust. A Meflecto stem, small steel cylinders inside the acetate temple, that flexes to fit any head. Marcello Mastroianni wore it in 1961 and the tram driver's tool became an icon. The design has never left production.

Here is what that continuity buys. Acetate can be repolished when it scratches. Temples can be reflexed when they loosen. Nose pads cost a few euros. And the lenses, the part that actually dies first, are a standard fit: any optician installs new ones, tinted or prescription. The frame is the product. Everything on it is a part.
