    Network-Attached Storage

Open your bank statement and find the line for cloud storage. It renews every month. It never stops. Ten euros for photos here, ten more for files there. You pay it for the rest of your life. You own none of it. The moment you stop paying, the door closes on your own memories.

    The object

A network-attached storage box is a small computer that holds your files at home. Two drive bays and a quiet fan. The Synology DS223j is the common starting point. You add your own hard drives. It becomes a private cloud you reach from any phone or laptop you own.

The drives are the wear part. They are meant to be swapped. When one fails you slide it out and put a new one in. The box itself runs for a decade or more. Nothing about it is sealed. It follows the repair logic that keeps a good laptop alive. The parts that age are the ones you replace.

    The money

A 2TB cloud plan costs about €9.99 a month. That is €120 a year, forever, for space on a company's server. The NAS is a one-time purchase. You buy the box once and the drives every several years.

    Per year~€120~€25 electricity
After 10 years~€1,200 spent, nothing owned~€830 spent, hardware and data yours

The box pays for itself against the subscription in about five years. After that the saving compounds every month you would have kept renting. The cloud bill runs past €3,000 over thirty years. The NAS asks for a new drive now and then and keeps going.

One honest note. A single box lives in one room, so keep a second copy of anything you cannot lose. A cheap external drive for the irreplaceable files closes that gap.

    Ownership

The files sit on a machine you can hold. No company can raise the rent or lock you out. A used Synology holds a real price on Marktplaats, so even the exit returns something. You stop renting space and start owning it.

Verdict. Buy the box once. It is the only cloud that will still be yours in ten years. Own better.
