    1. NCO Ledger

Reference: Mühle R89, €47 (Schuym, July 2026). Chromed brass, closed comb, made in the Erzgebirge since 1945. The counterpart is the cartridge system: handle free, cartridges near €3 each at the best NL price. A double-edge blade costs €0,15 (Derby, 100 for €12,95). Both blade types last 3 to 5 shaves.

Year one. Twice-weekly shaving, 25 blades either way.

    Mühle R89Cartridge system
    Razor€47€0
    25 blades€3,75€75
    Year-one cost€50,75€75

The Mühle wins its first year by €24. The premium repays itself in eight months.

Year ten. The razor has no moving parts. Only the blade wears.

    Mühle R89Cartridge system
    Razor, once€47€0
    250 blades€37,50€750
    Ten-year cost€84,50€750

Nine times the money for the cartridge. The free handle was the most expensive thing in the drawer.

Gap flagged: shave counts assume twice-weekly use and average blade life. Daily shavers spend more on both sides; the ratio holds. Unverified against a personal shave log.

    2. Long-form

Forty grams of chrome. One screw. The most expensive part costs fifteen cents.

The Mühle R89 holds a single double-edge blade between two steel plates. That is the entire mechanism. Nothing charges, nothing pairs, nothing wears except the blade, which every wet-shaving shop in the Netherlands sells a hundred at a time for the price of two coffees.

The cartridge system sells the mirror image. The handle arrives free. The cost hides in the head: five blades bonded into plastic, discarded whole the moment the sharpest edge dulls. Per cartridge, close to €3. The gift was the hook.

Run one year at two shaves a week. Blades for the Mühle: €3,75. Cartridges: €75. The €47 razor has paid for itself before the leaves turn.

Run ten years. The Mühle finishes at €84,50, razor and every blade it will ever ask for. The cartridge system finishes at €750. Same face, same decade, nine times the bill, engineered to stay invisible one small purchase at a time.

Mühle lists the head, the handle, and the screw as separate parts, should a machined block of chromed brass ever manage to fail. The blade is the only consumable. It is a commodity, priced like one.

Ownership takes two minutes a week. Unscrew, lift, drop in, close. No app tells you when. Your face does.

    3. Verdict card

The razor costs €47 once. The blades cost fifteen cents. The subscription was the product all along.

    4. VO script (50 sec, documentary)

Forty grams of chrome. One screw. One blade.

The Mühle R89. Made in Germany.

    Forty-seven euro. Once.

    A double-edge blade: fifteen cents.

A cartridge: three euro. Five blades fused in plastic. Thrown away whole.

Year one. Mühle: fifty euro. Cartridges: seventy-five. That handle came free.

    Year ten. Mühle: eighty-four euro.

    Cartridges: seven hundred and fifty.

Nine times the money. For a worse edge.

The subscription was never the razor. It was the blade.
