A cheap filter machine furs up with limescale, loses its brewing temperature within a few years, and lands in the bin the winter its heating element gives out.
The Technivorm Moccamaster KBG Select is the machine that ends that cycle. Technivorm has hand-assembled it in Amerongen since 1964. Every unit is built from parts you can buy loose. The carafe, the overflow tube, the lid and the brew-basket are all sold as spares through the Dutch webshop. A copper heating element holds the water at the right temperature for the whole brew, which is why the machine carries SCA and ECBC certification and a five-year household warranty. People run these for twenty and thirty years. A well-kept KBG still sells for real money on Marktplaats decades after it left the factory.
Here is where the money is. The Moccamaster costs €259 new. A budget Philips drip machine costs around €28. On the shelf the choice looks obvious. It is also the wrong one. The budget machine scales up and its element weakens, so you replace it roughly every four years. Across twenty years that runs to five or six machines and about €160, all of it gone the day each one hits the bin. The Moccamaster is a single purchase. A used KBG Select in good condition fetches €170 to €200. A tired one still clears €100. The machine you paid €259 for holds around €150 of resale years later.
| Over 20 years | Moccamaster KBG Select | Budget drip machine |
|---|---|---|
| Bought | €259 once | €28, five to six times |
| Total spent | €259 | around €160 |
| Wearing parts | carafe, tube, basket sold loose | none, sealed unit |
| Sold on after | around €150 | €0 |
| Net cost | around €109 | around €160 |
Both machines take the same ground coffee and the same paper filters, so the running cost cancels out and the comparison is machine against machine. The durable one ends up cheaper in cash and leaves you holding an asset where the other leaves a bin.
The Moccamaster ages into a fixture. The brushed housing wears in rather than out. Spare parts keep it current for decades. A serviced machine passes to a second owner who pays for the years still left in it. The €28 machine has no second owner.
Verdict. €259 once for a hand-built Dutch machine that still sells for around €150 twenty years on, against a budget drip you rebuy every few years for nothing.
