1. NCO Ledger

The inversion: the running shoe as the default for everything, the resoleable boot as the thing that outlives it. Reference: Meindl Bhutan MFS, €351,95 (bol.com, July 2026). A full resole at a Dutch specialist runs €34,95 to €99,95; call it €70. The counterpart: a €130 running shoe worn for general use, finished at roughly 800 km, which for a regular walker is under a year.

Year three.

The boot wins its first three years. The shoes wear out fast enough to lose even at a third of the unit price.

Year fifteen.

A Dutch schoenmaker's own photos show boots of six, eight, and twelve years, uppers sound, midsoles replaced, walking again.

Gap flagged: this ledger is honest about category. A runner training for pace needs a running shoe's cushioning. The comparison holds for the walker who buys running shoes by default for daily use, day hikes, and rough ground. The 800 km wear point is an industry figure, unverified per person.

2. Long-form

The boots come back from the cobbler looking new below the ankle. Above it, twelve years of weather. The leather never needed anyone.

The Meindl Bhutan MFS is a nubuck boot on a Vibram Multigrip sole, from a Bavarian firm that has made mountain footwear since 1928. The foam inside molds to the foot with body heat. It costs €351,95, which is why most people buy running shoes instead.

The running shoe is honest about its own horizon; the industry states it openly. Around 800 kilometres the midsole foam is done. For anyone who walks daily that arrives inside a year. The shoe was engineered around that number. There is no repair, because there is nothing left to anchor a repair to.

The boot's failure point is different in kind. Leather uppers survive decades. What dies is the sole. In the Netherlands an entire craft exists for exactly that death: specialists who resole Meindl, Hanwag, and Lowa with the same Vibram compound the factory presses, at €35 to €100. One of them keeps a gallery of the work: boots at six, eight, twelve years, the upper untouched, the sole reborn.

The ledger is unusual for this bank: the expensive object wins immediately. Three years of walking costs €390 to €520 in running shoes and €352 in one Meindl. Fifteen years costs €1.500 plus against €492, boot plus two resoles. Twelve pairs to landfill, or one pair to the cobbler, twice.

The boundary stays printed. A runner chasing pace on tarmac needs the foam. This Dossier is for everyone who bought that foam by default and walks it flat on pavements and dykes.

Ownership: clean the leather, wax it before winter, and send the boots away once the tread reads smooth. They come back.
