    The Loake 1880 Aldwych

    Loake 1880 Aldwych Goodyear-welted Oxford

    Endurism Spotlight: Loake 1880 Aldwych

Most dress shoes die the same way. The sole cracks near the ball of the foot. Within a season water is getting in and the shoe becomes bin material. You buy another pair. You repeat this every few years for the rest of your working life.

    The money

A glued dress shoe cannot be rebuilt. When the sole fails the shoe is finished. A mid-price pair costs around €130 and lasts roughly three years of regular wear. Over twenty years that is six or seven pairs and close to €980. All of it goes to landfill.

A Goodyear-welted shoe is built to be taken apart. The Loake 1880 Aldwych costs €429. Its leather sole is stitched onto a welt. When it wears through, a shoemaker sews on a fresh one for about €80. You keep the same shoes.

Count every resole and the maths still lands in your favour. Three new soles over twenty years comes to €240. The Aldwych then costs about €669 across two decades. It is still on your feet at the end. That is roughly €300 less than the disposable route.

    The object

The Aldwych is an Oxford in English calf leather, made in Loake's Kettering factory. The welt is the whole point. It is a strip of leather running around the base of the upper. A shoemaker opens and closes that seam when the sole is replaced. Nothing structural is destroyed in the process.

The calf upper takes polish and creases to the shape of your foot. A stray scuff buffs out. The shoe reads better at year ten than at year one.

    Ownership

A welted shoe holds a quiet resale market. Loake pairs in good order trade on Marktplaats for €80 to €150. Most owners never sell. They rotate two pairs and keep cedar trees inside them. They resole when the leather wears through.

This is the last dress shoe you buy. Everything after it is a new sole every few years.

Verdict: €429 buys a shoe you rebuild for decades. Own better.
