    Endurism Spotlight: Liebherr CNc 5703-22

A budget fridge-freezer sells for €499. You will buy it twice before a Liebherr wears out once.

    The money

The cheap appliance looks like the smart choice on the day you pay. A €499 fridge-freezer saves you €400 against the €899 Liebherr CNc 5703-22. That saving has a short life. Budget brands last eight to twelve years. Liebherr fridges run fifteen to twenty.

Run the numbers over twenty-five years. The cheap fridge gets replaced roughly every ten years, so you buy three. Three times €499 is €1.497. You also arrange delivery and disposal three times. The Liebherr costs €899, plus perhaps one €150 repair somewhere past year fifteen. That is around €1.050 across the same span.

So the expensive fridge is the cheap one. It costs you about €42 a year. The budget fridge costs you €60 a year and asks you to shop for it twice more.

    The object

A fridge-freezer is a compressor, a sealed cooling circuit, and a cabinet. Liebherr builds all three to be serviced. Thermostats, door seals, hinges and shelves stay available for years. A worn part gets swapped instead of binning the whole machine. The CNc 5703-22 holds 371 litres at energy label class C. It defrosts itself with NoFrost.

Budget machines are built to the price. When the compressor or the electronics fail, the repair costs more than the box. So the box goes to the tip. One is a repairable appliance. The other is a consumable in a large white shell.

    The math

    Cost over 25 years~€1.050~€1.497
    Per year~€42~€60

Both units carry a class C energy label, so the running cost on the meter is roughly a wash. The gap is entirely in how many times you buy the machine.

    Ownership

A fridge earns no patina and holds little resale value. Its dividend is quieter. It is the appliance you stop thinking about. You buy it once. It runs for two decades in the corner of the kitchen. The €499 you would have spent again in year ten stays in your account. Wealth is often just the purchase you did not have to repeat.

Verdict: the €899 fridge is cheaper than the €499 one over its life. Buy the machine you can repair. Buy it once.
