Endurism Spotlight: The Leather Bag
The strap on a coated handbag starts to flake at the fold within two or three years. The plastic skin lifts away from the fabric beneath it. That bag ends up in the bin and the spending starts again.
The money
A coated "leather-look" handbag costs around €45. It peels at the folds and cannot be restitched, so you replace it every three years. A full-grain leather shoulder bag from The Chesterfield Brand costs €179,95 once. It lasts fifteen to twenty years. Over eighteen years the cheap bag costs you about €270 across six purchases. The leather bag costs about €215, including one repair at a cobbler. You pay less. You still own something at the end.
The object
Full-grain leather is the top layer of the hide, with the grain intact. It does not carry a printed plastic coating that can lift off. The Chesterfield Brand uses waxed pull-up leather, tanned in the traditional way. The stitching can be redone. The hardware can be replaced. This is a bag you hand to a cobbler for another decade.
Coated or "PU" leather is a fabric base sprayed with polyurethane. Industry sources put its life at two to five years before it cracks. Once the coating breaks, there is no repair.
The math
| Coated PU bag | Full-grain leather bag | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | €45 | €179,95 |
| Lifespan | ~3 years | 15–20 years |
| Repairable | No | Yes |
| Bags bought in 18 years | 6 | 1 |
| 18-year cost | ~€270 | ~€215 |
| Resale value | €0 | Holds value |
Ownership
Waxed leather darkens and softens where your hand touches it. The scuffs become the look of the bag rather than the end of it. This is the patina dividend. The object gains character while a coated bag only degrades. A used full-grain bag still sells on Marktplaats. A peeled PU bag is worth nothing to anyone.
One leather bag, carried for twenty years, costs less than the plastic ones you would otherwise throw away.
