You can buy a waterpomptang at the Gamma for eleven euro. It grips a nut. The third or fourth time you lean on it under load, the teeth slip. The corners round off the nut. Now you have a fastener you cannot turn. The tool that did it is in your hand.

The Knipex Cobra costs thirty-one euro. Article 87 01 250, polished head, two hundred and fifty millimetres. That is the standard size. It fits a hand, a toolbox, and most of what a house throws at you.

What it is.

Chrome-vanadium steel, forged, oil-hardened in stages. The gripping teeth are hardened to about 61 HRC. Cheaper pliers run softer steel. Soft steel deforms under load. The Cobra bites the thousandth nut the way it bit the first.

The adjustment is a push-button. You set the upper jaw on the work, press, slide the lower jaw up to meet it. No trial and error. The jaw self-locks on pipes and nuts. It does not walk off the work when you pull. A double guide keeps the head stable under load. Made in Germany. It feels like it.

The ledger.

Three years. The Knipex is thirty-one euro. Maintenance is a drop of oil on the pivot, call it zero. A used Knipex of this class lists around fifteen euro on Marktplaats. Net cost over three years is roughly sixteen euro.

The Gamma tang is eleven euro. Maintenance is zero. Resale is zero, because nobody buys a used eleven-euro waterpomptang. Net cost over three years is eleven euro.

Read that again. Over three years, in cash, the cheap one is five euro cheaper.

Look past the three years. The real number is the bolt. The day the cheap tang slips and rounds a fastener, the five euro you saved is gone. A bolt-extractor set is fifteen to twenty-five euro. A rounded fitting behind a sink is a Saturday, and possibly a plumber. The cheap tool does not cost you when you buy it. It costs you when it fails. It fails under exactly the load you bought it for.

The years.

A Knipex Cobra does not wear out. The two parts that can wear, the plastic jaws and the adjustment mechanism, are sold as spare parts. You replace the worn part. The tool stays.

The repair economy runs on tools like this. When replacing things gets expensive, the person who can loosen and reseat a fitting stops paying someone to do it. The Cobra needs no battery, no charger, no supply chain. Your grandfather's tools still work. So will this.

De Gamma-tang is elf euro. Resale nul. Niemand koopt een tweedehands tang van elf euro. Netto over drie jaar: elf euro.

In puur geld is de goedkope dus vijf euro goedkoper. Over drie jaar.

Kijk voorbij die drie jaar. Het echte getal is de moer. De dag dat de goedkope tang wegglijdt, is je vijf euro weg. Een uitdraaiset kost vijftien tot vijfentwintig euro. Een afgerond fitting achter de wasbak kost een zaterdag.

De Cobra slijt niet. De twee delen die wel slijten, de bekken en de verstelling, verkoopt Knipex als onderdeel. Je vervangt het versleten deel. De tang blijft.

Goedkoop is de duurste keuze. Op een tang van dertig euro zit de kostenpost niet in drie jaar geld. Hij zit in de moeren die je sloopt en de tangen die je blijft kopen.
