    Endurism Spotlight: Jøtul F 602

    A cast-iron Jøtul F 602 lit every winter since the 1970s still sells for €600 to €900.

    The money

New, the Jøtul F 602 ECO costs €1.577. On Marktplaats the used ones change hands at an average of €907. Around €670 of what you pay comes back, decades later, from a stove that already did its work.

A budget plate-steel stove starts near €225. It heats a room on the first evening just fine. The steel is thin. When the firebox warps or the welds give, there are no parts to buy. The stove goes to the tip and returns nothing.

That is the whole case. One stove holds most of its value. The other is money you will not see again.

Both need a flue and a fitter. Spend that once, on the stove you keep.

    The object

Jøtul has cast iron in Norway since 1853. The 602 is its small classic. It has been made in roughly its current form since the 1940s. The number is cast into the top plate. The lion sits on the door.

Cast iron has no welded seams to split. It does not warp under repeated heat the way plate steel does. It soaks up the fire and keeps radiating into the room long after the flames drop. At 2 to 8.5 kW it warms a normal living room without roasting it.

    Ownership

Everything that wears on a 602 is a cheap consumable. Firebricks, baffle plates and heat shields run €45 to €129. A door gasket and a pane of glass cost a few euros more. You rebuild the inside and the iron carries on.

This is why a stove from the 1970s still lights tonight. It still sells tomorrow. A live market for these runs on Marktplaats, from a few hundred to a couple of thousand euros. The surface darkens and evens out with every season. That patina is the market telling you the thing held.

Own better. The cheap stove is this winter's heat. The Jøtul is the last stove you install. Most of its price is still yours to collect.
