    Endurism Dossier: The Hunter Original

Cast-iron ceiling fan, oil-bath motor. The forty-year fixture.

    NCO ledger, three years

    AcquisitionMaintenance, 3yrResale, yr 3Net cost, 3yr
    Hunter Original€450€0€0 realised€450
    Cheap ceiling fan€60€0€0€60

Read this honestly too. Over three years the cheap fan wins by €390. It is not close. A three-year window is the wrong tool for this object.

Run it to forty years. The cheap fan gets replaced six times, costs around €360 in hardware alone, and means six installations and six trips to the tip. The Hunter is installed once, carries a lifetime motor warranty, and is still turning. The line crosses somewhere past year twenty. Resale never helps here. Longevity, the warranty and the pass-down carry the whole argument.

    The Editor

A Hunter Original turns over the diners at Balthazar in London and has done for years. Cast iron housing. An oil-bath motor that lubricates its own bearings. One customer has run the same fan for over fifty years.

The design is from 1906 and has barely changed, because it was right the first time. Cast iron does not warp. The oil bath keeps the bearings quiet for decades. The motor carries a warranty with no expiry date. When something does wear, the distributor stocks the part.

Now the honest ledger. At three years a €450 fan loses to a €60 fan by a distance no patina story can close. This is a forty-year fixture. Judge it on forty years.

On that horizon it inverts completely. The cheap ceiling fan is replaced six times across forty years. Each one is wired in by an electrician. It wobbles within a few summers. It ends up in the tip. The Hunter is wired in once. The kids take it down from that ceiling and hang it in their own.

The weak spot is resale. Endurism says so plainly. You will not sell this fan. The case is the lifespan. It is the last ceiling fan that ceiling will ever need.

    Verdict card

The last ceiling fan that ceiling will ever hold. One owner is past fifty years on the same motor.
