A hardware-store hatchet costs seventeen euro and ninety-nine cents. The head works loose by the second winter. The soft steel stops taking an edge. The handle splits at the eye the first time you swing it into a real log. You walk back to the shop and buy another one.

The Gränsfors Bruk Small Forest Axe costs €169,95 and ends that walk for good. It has been hand-forged in the Swedish village of Gränsfors since 1902. Every head carries the initials of the smith who made it, struck into the steel beside the crown stamp. The steel is Swedish carbon steel, ground thin and hard. You keep its edge with a stone rather than a bench grinder. The handle is oiled American hickory, forty-nine centimetres of it, and it comes with a leather sheath and a twenty-year written guarantee.

A forged head has no weld line and no casting seam waiting to crack. When the edge dulls you sharpen it. When the hickory finally wears, after years of real use, you fit a new handle for around thirty euro instead of buying a new axe. The head you buy at thirty is the head your child splits kindling with at sixty.

The cheap hatchet looks like the frugal choice. Count the winters instead of the receipt. Someone who actually uses an axe replaces a seventeen-euro one every two or three years. Over twenty years that is seven hatchets and about a hundred and twenty-six euro. Every one is worth nothing the day its handle goes. The Gränsfors is a single purchase. Re-hang the handle once and you have spent roughly two hundred euro across the same twenty years. A used Swedish forged axe still sells for well over half its shop price on Marktplaats. The money you actually lose is smaller than the pile of dead hatchets.

The head darkens with oil and weather. The edge takes on the exact angle of your own sharpening. The handle wears smooth to the shape of your grip. The smith's initials stay legible the whole time, which is the point. It gets more yours and more valuable the longer you keep it. The replacement tax keeps running quietly beside the cheap one.

The verdict: one good axe, re-handled once, outlasts seven cheap ones and still sells for real money.
