    Gloverall Original Monty

    Gloverall Original Monty duffle coat

    Endurism Spotlight: Gloverall Original Monty

A fast-fashion winter coat is built to survive about twenty wears. By its second winter the blended wool has pilled and the shoulders have gone soft. You buy another one. You keep buying another one, roughly every three winters, for the rest of your life.

    The money

A Gloverall Original Monty costs around €585 in the Netherlands. A high-street wool-blend coat costs about €100. The cheap coat looks like the smarter choice on the day you pay. Over twenty winters it is the expensive one.

Count it out. The €100 coat gets replaced every three winters, so you buy roughly seven of them across twenty years. That is €700, spent one tired coat at a time, with nothing to show at the end. The Gloverall is one purchase. It outlasts the whole run and still hangs in the wardrobe.

The durable coat is cheaper per winter from the start. It also keeps a resale value the cheap coat never had.

    The object

Gloverall has made this coat in England since 1951. The Original Monty is 90 percent Melton wool at 910 grams per running metre. Melton is fulled wool, pressed dense enough to turn wind and weather. The toggles are wood. The fastenings are jute rope. The interior is cotton herringbone webbing. Nothing on it is glued.

That construction is why it lasts. It is also why it can be fixed. A snapped toggle is a wooden toggle and a length of rope. A worn hood or cape can be repaired rather than binned. The coat is built from parts a person can replace.

    Ownership

Melton wool ages the way good leather does. It softens against the body. It holds its line for decades of cold mornings. The coat you buy at thirty is the coat you hand over at fifty. The secondhand market on Marktplaats and eBay stays busy with people who want exactly that. Depreciation is a tax on disposable goods. This coat earns a patina dividend instead.

The Original Monty costs more once and costs less every winter after.
