    Endurism Spotlight: Fiskars StaySharp Max

A petrol mower charges you for the same lawn twice. You pay once at the till, then you pay every summer after that.

    The money

A budget petrol mower costs around €200. Keeping it running then costs roughly €40 a year in fuel, oil and servicing. The engine rarely reaches its fifteenth birthday, so a second machine lands inside the window. A manual reel mower ends that arrangement. You buy it once. It runs on the push.

    The object

The Fiskars StaySharp Max is a push reel mower with a 46 cm cut. The blades never touch each other, so they hold their edge for years. The steel is hardened and the cutting height sets centrally from 40 to 100 mm. There is no engine to seize and no battery to go flat. The one wearing part is the blade. A sharpen brings it back. This is a machine with almost nothing in it that can break.

    The math

Over fifteen years the reel mower costs about €285 all in, the purchase plus the odd sharpening. The petrol mower costs around €1.000 across the same stretch once fuel, servicing and one replacement are counted. That is roughly €700 you keep. It is about three and a half times less spent on the same grass.

    Ownership

A reel mower is a small, honest asset. It holds its price on Marktplaats because there is no worn engine for a buyer to distrust. A used petrol mower sells slowly and cheap. It is quiet enough to use early on a Sunday. It leaves the grass cut cleaner than a rotary blade tears it.

It earns its keep on a flat to gently sloping lawn that you cut most weeks. Long grass and soaking wet grass will both defeat it. Buy it for the lawn you actually have.

Buy it once and the lawn costs nothing to cut for the next fifteen years.
