Honest at three years. The synthetic bag wins the cash. It costs sixty euros and the Filson costs five hundred.
The resale changes the picture. Used Filson Rugged Twill holds €300 to €400, and discontinued pieces have sold above their retail price. So a €500 briefcase carries a floor of three hundred under it. The net cost of ownership lands far below the sticker. The synthetic bag is worth nothing the moment the coating peels.
The patina dividend is real here. Waxed twill softens and darkens. Bridle leather burnishes. The brass dulls to a warm tone. The bag looks better at year ten than at year one, and the secondhand market pays for it.
