Endurism Spotlight: The Eleiko Training Bar

A second-hand Eleiko bar still sells for around €450 on Marktplaats. The cheap bar it replaced sells for nothing.

    The money

An Eleiko Weightlifting Training Bar costs €932,50 new in the Netherlands. A budget 20 kg olympic bar from Decathlon costs €110. The gap looks brutal until you follow the money over time. Most of the Eleiko's price comes back to you. Almost none of the cheap bar's does.

That is the whole case. You are parking money in steel that holds its value. A used 15 kg Eleiko bar changes hands for €450 on the Dutch second-hand market today. The bar keeps a large share of what you paid for years. The €110 bar has no resale market at all. It ends as scrap when the finish flakes and the sleeves seize.

    The object

Eleiko has forged bars in Sweden since 1957. The steel is rated to 215.000 PSI. The sleeves spin on bronze bushings that a technician can service. The finish resists the sweat and chalk that corrode lesser bars. The company backs it with a ten-year warranty against manufacturing faults.

A cheap bar cuts every one of those corners. The chrome plating lifts and rusts underneath. The knurling wears smooth within a few seasons. The sleeves bind because the bushings are stamped rather than machined. Under real load the bar takes a bend it never loses.

    The math

Here is the net cost of ownership across a decade of serious training.

    Eleiko Training BarBudget olympic bar
    Price new (NL)€932,50€110
LifespanDecades, rebuildableA few years of hard use
    Resale after 10 years~€450~€0
Net cost if sold on~€480€110, then replaced

The cheap bar looks cheaper on the receipt. The gap narrows every time you replace it and every time you cannot sell it. The Eleiko sits in your rack for thirty years and still carries a resale price when you are done. One purchase becomes an asset with a market. The other becomes a purchase you make again.

    Ownership

A good bar rewards the hands. The knurling grips without tearing. The spin stays honest under a heavy clean. Chalk and use give the steel a patina that a serious lifter reads like a logbook. You buy this bar once in a lifting life. You pass it on with value still in it.

Verdict: The last barbell you buy.
