Demeyere Industry 5 stainless steel frying pan

    Endurism Spotlight: Demeyere Industry 5

A nonstick pan is the only thing in your kitchen built to wear out. The surface you pay for is engineered to peel away in a few years. Then you buy the same pan again.

    The object

The Demeyere Industry 5 is a frying pan with nothing to lose. Five bonded layers of stainless steel and aluminium, made in Belgium, carrying a thirty-year guarantee. There is no coating on it. Nothing can flake or expire. You can drag a metal spatula across it and put it in the dishwasher. It will still be flat and bright when your children inherit it.

    The math

A cheap nonstick pan costs around 28 euro. The coating lasts three to five years before food starts to stick for good. Call it four years. Across three decades that is seven or eight pans, each one binned the moment the surface fails. You spend roughly 210 euro to keep re-buying the same disappointment.

The Demeyere costs 109 euro once. It outlives the thirty-year window with room to spare. Stainless steel holds a real secondhand market on Marktplaats. The pan still has a price on the day you are finished with it.

Cook four times a week and each pan costs you a few cents per use. The nonstick pan asks for that money again every fourth year. The stainless pan asks once.

    Ownership

A nonstick pan is rented. You buy the coating, then buy it again when it wears off. A stainless pan is owned. It builds a light patina and cooks more evenly as you learn its heat. It gets better the longer you keep it. One of them is an asset on your stove. The other is a subscription you forgot you signed.

Buy the pan with no surface to lose. You pay for it once.
