    The Dehumidifier

MeacoDry Arete One 12L (dehumidifier and HEPA air purifier)

    Endurism Spotlight: The Dehumidifier

A damp Dutch autumn has a running cost. Most people pay it in little plastic tubs of crystals.

You buy a moisture absorber for a few euros. You refill it every six to eight weeks. You do that forever. Three tubs around the house come to roughly €84 a year. That bill never stops. The crystals pull a few cups of water from one corner. They never dry a genuinely damp room.

A dehumidifier ends that purchase. The MeacoDry Arete One 12L costs €189,50 once. It pulls litres of water a day. It dries a whole room. It carries a five-year warranty. Over a decade the tubs cost around €850 and leave nothing behind. The machine costs around €570 to buy and run. At the end of the decade it still works.

    The object

Meaco is a British company that has built dehumidifiers for two decades. The Arete One runs a compressor behind a HEPA filter. It dries the air and cleans it in one pass. The reservoir, the dust filter and the HEPA element lift out and replace. Meaco sells those parts and runs an after-sales desk. A worn filter is a €30 swap. It is not a reason to bin the unit.

The five-year warranty is the honest signal. A cheap dehumidifier gets one or two years. It is built to be thrown away. This one is built to be kept.

    The math

    Moisture-absorber tubsMeacoDry Arete One 12L
    Upfront~€18 (three starter units)€189,50
    Running cost~€84 a year, forever~€35 a year in electricity
Ten-year total~€850~€570 (incl. power and one filter)

The machine carries its own electricity on its side of the ledger. It still comes in nearly €300 cheaper over ten years. By year four the machine and the tubs have cost about the same. Every year after that the machine pulls ahead.

    Ownership

A dehumidifier holds its value. A clean, working Meaco resells on Marktplaats for a good share of its price. The people who want one know what the cheap ones do.

Damp is also the expensive part of a house you do not see coming. Condensation becomes mould. Mould becomes a repaint or a plasterer. Controlling the moisture is the cheapest repair you will ever make.

For a single wardrobe or a caravan, a tub is fine. For a room you live in, the tub is theatre you pay for every month.

Buy the machine once and keep a dry room you actually own. Own better.
