    Endurism Spotlight: Cumulus Panyam 450

A twenty-nine euro sleeping bag feels like a win at the till. Then the loft gives out after a few seasons and the cold comes back. So you buy another one. Over twenty-five years of real use that is five bags and nothing left to show for it.

    The object

The Cumulus Panyam 450 is a down mummy bag made in Poland. It holds 450 grams of 850 fill-power goose down. The comfort rating sits at zero degrees, so it covers three Dutch seasons and most summer nights in the mountains. Down is the reason it lasts. Good down recovers its loft season after season. Synthetic fill flattens under compression and never fully springs back.

    The money

Buy once at 399 euro, or keep buying a 55 euro synthetic bag every five years. For someone who actually sleeps outside, the budget bag fades fast. The Panyam keeps its warmth for twenty-five years with dry storage and the occasional wash. A used Cumulus still sells for well over 150 euro on Marktplaats and eBay. That resale is the patina dividend. The cheap bag retires to a landfill worth nothing.

Twenty-five years at twenty-five nights a year is roughly 625 nights. The down bag lands near 32 cent a night after resale. The synthetic string lands near 44 cent and keeps you colder the whole way. The expensive bag is the cheaper bag.

    Ownership

Down rewards care. Store it uncompressed in the cotton sack it ships with. Wash it once a season with down soap and dry it slowly with a few tennis balls. A snag in the shell takes a simple patch. Treated this way the Panyam ages into a warmer, softer version of itself.

A bag you use a few nights a year can last well past five years. The cash case is sharpest for people who really camp. Down also hates damp, so keep it dry.

Buy it once and it costs you less per night than the cheap bag you keep replacing.
