The Cotton Handkerchief
Open your last grocery receipt and find the line for tissues. It comes back every few weeks, for the rest of your life.
Paper tissues are a subscription nobody signed. A box of Albert Heijn own-brand runs €1,15 for 150 sheets. A box of Kleenex runs €2,19 for 72. You use a tissue once and it becomes refuse. Then you reach for the next box. The money leaves. Nothing stays behind.
The object
A handkerchief is a square of woven cotton, hemmed on four sides. Tiseco sells twelve of them, 40 by 40 centimetres, for €12,99. There is no mechanism and no coating to fail. You wash it with the towels and carry it again the next morning. A dozen keeps a rotation running while the rest dry. Cotton this plain lasts for decades. Many people still carry their grandfather's.
The money
Anchor the tax at one own-brand box a month. That is €13,80 a year on the cheapest tissues in the shop. The €12,99 set pays for itself inside the first year. After that it costs nothing but a place in a wash you already run. Over thirty years the cheap-tissue habit spends about €414. The same thirty years on Kleenex-class boxes runs past €1.600. The handkerchiefs stay at €12,99 the whole time.
| Cotton handkerchiefs (12) | Paper tissues | |
|---|---|---|
| Price today | €12,99 once | €1,15 to €2,19 per box |
| Running cost | washed with the laundry | bought again every few weeks |
| 30-year spend | €12,99 | €414 own-brand, €1.600+ branded |
| What you own after | twelve softened squares | nothing |
The gap is small in any single year. That is the point. You delete a recurring line for good, for the price of one lunch.
Ownership and patina
New cotton is a little stiff. Every wash softens it. After a year the weave sits closer and the square folds into a pocket without thought. A paper tissue is at its best for four seconds. A handkerchief is at its best after a hundred washes. It ages toward you. The set you buy now is the set a child of yours could still be folding in 2060.
The verdict. Buy the dozen once. It is the only thing in the bathroom cabinet that will still be yours in thirty years.
Own better.
