1. NCO Ledger: the object against the subscription

This ledger has no cheap product as counterpart. The counterpart is a service: the gym membership at €25 a month. The bestseller lists offer adjustable vests and resistance bands; the older answer is a single piece of cast iron.

Year three.

Iron holds its price per kilo on the used market. Bought used and sold used, the bell can cost nothing at all.

Year fifteen.

Gap flagged. It is a big one. a gym is more than access to iron. Machines, classes, community, a reason to leave the house. This ledger prices one narrow case honestly: the person who pays €25 a month and mostly lifts free weights. It does not price motivation. Resale per kilo read off current Marktplaats listings, unverified as sold comps.

2. Long-form

The bell in the corner of the garage was cast before you were born. It has not depreciated a cent per kilo since.

A cast-iron kettlebell is the simplest object in this entire series: one piece of poured iron with a handle. Nothing bonds, nothing seals, nothing updates. Swing it against gravity for fifteen years and the only mark is on the paint.

The bestseller lists sell the same gravity in newer packaging: adjustable vests with zips and buckles, latex bands that perish in a drawer, dumbbells that convert into other dumbbells. And behind all of it stands the real counterpart, the gym subscription, €25 a month for access to a room where the iron lives.

The arithmetic is almost embarrassing. A 16-kilo bell costs €50 to €64 new, or €25 to €32 on Marktplaats, where iron trades at €1,50 to €2 per kilo and has for years. The gym costs €300 a year, every year, forever. Three years of membership: €900. Three years of a used kettlebell, sold on afterwards at the same price per kilo: effectively zero.

The honest boundary deserves its own paragraph. A gym is coaching, machines, showers, and for many people the only structure that makes training happen at all. If the membership gets you through the door, it is money well spent. No ledger should talk you out of it. This ledger is for the other case: the subscription paid out of guilt, for a room you visit to do what one bell in the hallway does for free.

Ownership is nothing. Wipe it. The paint chips, the iron shows through, the value per kilo stays where it was.

Iron is the rare asset in this bank that neither appreciates nor depreciates. It just waits.

3. Verdict card

The gym charges €300 a year for access to iron. The iron costs €30. Once. Then it sells for €30.

If the gym gets you through the door, pay it gladly.

If it is guilt on a direct debit, the iron is waiting.

It does not expire. It does not renew.
