1. NCO Ledger
Reference: Bialetti Moka Express, 3-cup, €32,99 (bol.com, July 2026). In production since 1933; over two hundred million sold. A seal-and-filter kit costs €7 to €12. The counterpart is the capsule machine: roughly €90 for the machine, €0,35 to €0,45 per capsule.

Twenty times the money, on a machine that itself needs replacing along the way.
Gap flagged: capsule figures assume one cup daily at typical NL pricing; heavy households and premium lines run higher. Ground coffee for the Moka is real money but roughly comparable per cup to the beans inside a capsule, so it is left out of both columns rather than distort one.
2. Long-form
An octagonal aluminium pot, drawn in 1933, still outsells its own imitators. It costs €33 and it is nearly the last coffee purchase in it.
The Bialetti Moka Express carries three parts that ever ask for attention: a rubber seal, a filter plate, and the pot itself, which does not wear. Water below, coffee in the funnel, screw the halves together, put it on the flame. When the seal dries out after a year or two of daily pots, the fix costs €8 and thirty seconds.
The capsule machine sells the opposite economics. Ninety euro for the machine, then €0,35 to €0,45 per cup, forever, billed in amounts too small to notice. One cup a day is roughly €135 a year in capsules. Three years in, the capsule drinker has spent €490. The Moka drinker has spent €43, most of it on the pot itself.
At ten years the capsule column reads €1.530, including the second machine that the first one made necessary. The Moka column reads €68: the pot, and four seals.
The honest complication is speed. A capsule pours in under a minute at the press of a button. The Moka wants five minutes and a little attention at the stove. That trade is real, but it is a time trade, never a cost trade. Its price deserves to be printed instead of dissolved into a subscription nobody totals.
Ownership is a rinse and a yearly seal. The aluminium seasons inside with coffee oils, the patina Italian households refuse to scrub off, because the pot pours better with it.
The capsule buys you a minute. The pot buys you the next ninety years of mornings.
3. Verdict card
One pot since 1933. The seal costs eight euro. A year of capsules costs a hundred and thirty-five.
