A baby runs through roughly 7.300 nappies before potty training. At twenty to twenty-five cents each, that stack costs about €1.500 per child. Every one of them is binned within hours.

The money

The disposable nappy is a rental. You pay for it again every morning for two and a half years. A reusable nappy asks for the money once and then serves every change until your child is dry.

The object

Ownership

A cotton nappy is a real object you keep. The snaps are replaceable and the elastic can be restitched. A worn set still sells on Marktplaats to the next family. Disposables have no second life and no resale. They leave your house as rubbish and carry your money out with them.
