Somewhere in the Netherlands a company makes its living repainting used beds and selling them on. The bed is the Auping Auronde. No such trade exists for the flat-pack frame you assemble on a Sunday. That frame is worth nothing the day it leaves the shop.

Frans de la Haye drew the Auronde in 1973. Auping has built it in Deventer the same way ever since. Curved layers of beech hold a steel spiral base, with aluminium fittings at the joints. Auping guarantees that spiral base for thirty-five years against wire and frame breakage. The parts are sold loose. A frame, a base, a headboard, a mattress. You replace one piece and keep the bed.

A complete Auronde in 140 by 200 costs around €2.065. A budget double frame with a slat base costs about €135 at a webshop. The gap is real and it is large. The budget frame creaks within a year and sags within a few. Most people bin it and buy another every eight years or so. Over thirty years that is roughly four frames and about €540, all of it gone.

The Auronde runs the other way. You buy one. The used market keeps it liquid the entire time. A used Auronde sells for around €439 on average across more than a thousand Marktplaats listings. A professionally refurbished one goes for over €1.000. The mattress wears out on both sides of this table, so leave it out. The frame is the asset.

The beech darkens with the years. The design has not changed since 1973. A base from a decade ago still fits a frame bought today. This is why the refurbishers can work. A used Auronde has a queue of buyers. The budget frame goes to the kerb. The money you paid for it left with the first one. When your children take the Auronde, they take something that still holds its price.

The Auronde is one bed for a lifetime and a resale price the whole way through.
