Endurism Spotlight: Abus Granit X-Plus 540
Almost a million bikes vanish in the Netherlands every year. Two percent are ever recovered. The average e-bike now costs €2.872. Most of them hang on a rack behind a lock a thief opens in under a minute.
The object
The Abus Granit X-Plus 540 ends that arithmetic. It is a U-lock built around a thirteen-millimetre bar of hardened special steel. It carries an ART-3 rating and Abus security level 15. That rating is not decoration. Dutch insurers only pay out on a stolen e-bike secured with an ART-approved lock. An uncertified cable lock voids the claim before the bike is even gone.
The steel is the whole point. A parabolic hardened bar resists the bolt cutters and the car jacks that defeat softer locks in seconds. The cylinder is weather-sealed against a decade of Dutch rain. One Granit outlives three or four bikes and asks for nothing but the occasional drop of oil.
The math
A cheap spiraalslot costs €6,95 and looks like a saving of eighty-three euros. It is nothing of the sort. The cheap lock protects nothing. Ride a few years behind it and the odds catch up. The bike goes, and because no certified lock means no payout, you buy the whole asset again out of your own pocket. The €89,95 Granit lasts fifteen years across several bikes. That works out near six euros a year to keep a three-thousand-euro machine off the back of a van.

Ownership
A lock is the rare object you buy hoping never to test it. It rides under the saddle and picks up road grime. The cylinder wears smooth from years of the same key. After ten winters the steel is scratched and dull. It still costs a thief more time and noise than the theft is worth to them. That is what a good lock buys. You stop wondering whether the bike will be there when you come back.
Verdict
A ninety-euro lock guarding a three-thousand-euro bike is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.
